Nelson & Kristin Get [Engaged]!

Happy Valentine’s Day, ya’ll!

Kristin & Nelson came to me out of nowhere!  No sooner had I booked Kristin’s friend Ben, I had an inquiry in my inbox from Kristin.  She admittedly ”stalked” me after Ben tagged my page on Facebook in a post, and I couldn’t have been happier… or more flattered!  After a 45 minute phone conversation we had a signed contract, deposit and an engagement session date… for the next weekend!  If I knew anything I knew Kristin was ON IT!  As we were traversing downtown Raleigh we came across the CUTEST shop, and decided to theme up our shoot a bit.

Then we moved into this cute little nook in Raleigh, and borrowed a nearby bicycle!

Get [Personal]: Open Table Monday’s

Monday is my home base.  It’s the day life resets itself.  Usually I take Monday’s “off” from the studio (even though I’m blogging today).  I clean up my house, go grocery shopping, pick up the dry cleaning, go to the post office… and then?  I cook.  Why?  Because I need to.  It’s the one time where I can put in a disc of Big Bang, zone out, and all I have to do is follow the recipe.  It clears my head from all the junk its accumulated during the week.

Monday is also “open table” night… with a few of my friends I have a standing invitation, “If you need something to do on Monday night, if you’ve had a bad day or “case of the Monday’s”, let me know you’re coming by at least noonish, and we’ll have a spot for you at the table.”  It’s become therapeutic, and for a few of my friends – something that gets them through that Monday dredge of going back to the grind.  The only problem has been coming up with new recipes (enter skinnytaste!).

You see, I know I’m blessed.  I know that my Monday’s off aren’t everyone’s day off, but I know that I can use that day to make someone else’s day better.  And sometimes all anyone needs to know is that they have a place waiting for them at The Table, anytime they want to take advantage of it.

Because, I remember the family dinners when I was growing up.  We would eat for 30 minutes, and then spend an hour laughing and sharing the day.  Some of my favorite memories have come from those times.  Even if I can’t recreate that every night, at least I can do that once a week for my Monday night family; and give them a sense of community, a place to offload their mind and heart, share a glass of wine, and give them something to look forward to.

Tonight’s dish: Chicken Cacciatore

Ok, off to the day!  XOXO!

Rants and Raves: Space Heaters & Cake

As Ryan came home he proceeded to look at the thermostat, and then at my space heater… still on in my office.  ”It is NOT 72° in here, it’s freezing everywhere except YOUR office!”  he said.  I couldn’t deny that I had hardly left my little slice of paradise all day, better yet wandered into other parts of the house.  I had a to-do list as long as Italy’s boot, and well… Schroeder just looks so cute cuddled up next to it, you couldn’t expect me to turn it off right?  … And besides… Ryan runs warm anyway, and he knew I was cold 90% of the time when he married me.

This week’s Rants go to…
*The thermostat located right outside my office, forcing the rest of the house to be cold (obviously, not my fault)
*Beach houses being ridiculously expensive to rent in the summer (I need a vacation).
*The to-do list as long as Italy sitting on my desk that never seems to get any smaller.

This week’s Raves go to…
*My fabulous space heater, that warms me only like a fireplace could (maybe I should install one of THOSE in my office!)
*My Monday night family dinners… More on that later!
*One of the BEST cake designers in Charlotte… Amy Craparo… I could eat her cake for breakfast.

1. Tell us a little bit about Amy…
Hmmmm. passionate about all that I do, risk taker, wife of 20 years, mother of a beautiful 17 yr old and handsome 12 yr old. I’d like to think I’m loving, kind, and generous (at least that’s what my husband tells me). Now you don’t want to hear about my flaws now do you???

2.      How did you become a cake designer?
Kind of a flukey thing, I literally called a woman out of the blue that made incredible tasting cakes and asked her if she would be interested in selling her business and training me to do what she did. I really didn’t know anything about cakes at this time (11 years ago). See, I told you I was a risk taker!

3.      Describe your style:  I’d say I’m traditional with a modern twist

4.      What inspires you?   The client inspires me!

5.      What inspires your cake designs?
Everything around me. When I am out and about people probably think I’m crazy because if I see something that inspires me such as clothing, jewelry, wrapping paper, gift bags, ect., I am whipping out my camera phone to get a snap shot so that I can implement it in some way onto a cake… (note: I walked into Amy’s shop around Christmas, and she had a Claire Pettibone cake design… my jaw hit the floor!)

6.      How do you keep your designs fresh?
I keep very involved in current trends in both the baking industry and wedding industry. My goal is to give the client all options regarding their cakes with the freshest and most innovative designs

7.
What makes you different from other cake designers?
Tough one to answer. Every cake designer I know is passionate about their cake. I think we all have a lot in common. We’re doing our best to make the best tasting showpiece for our clients.

9.  3 things you can’t live without: God, my family and friends, cake. Well I guess that’s four things!

10.  What is the best advice anyone has ever given you? Listen to what the client wants, not what I want.

11.  What is the best advice you can give to an engaged couple?
Enjoy the process of your planning. Be true to yourselves and let your celebration be a reflection of you. Most of all pick a cake that you will love to look at in 50 years!

Sarah Get’s [Glamorous]!

Sarah was one of my favorite clients in 2011.  We talked over email for a bit, and then arranged for a nice breakfast meeting while she was studying for her CPA exams… chick is brilliant!  At the end of the meeting we had laughed, cried and talked about so much more than photographing her wedding; and I knew that if she were just planning on staying in Charlotte rather than moving to DC, we could become good friends.  We had absolutely amazing light for this session, and since we were out in the middle of nowhere she had to change in the local Starbucks bathroom!  Since we shot on a Saturday I think most of the people thought we were running away from her wedding… and even on her wedding day that wouldn’t even have been close to true.  Hope you enjoy!

My favorites…

The Jenkins Get [Together]!

Ladies and Gents… meet my second family!  Pastor Dale, Carrie, Gabby and Kaleb.  You may not see family photos on my website, as it’s mostly geared towards my passion (weddings), but I will occasionally do family sessions for the families that ask, or have grown since the wedding day.

I don’t think I have enough words to express how amazing this family is, and how great our time was together.  When Pastor Dale contacted me about taking their family photos, I was trying my hardest to sound composed over the phone… because on the other end I was doing a little happy dance (haha)!  As you can see there was plenty of laughter, some amazing shots, and absolutely beautiful light.  Hope you all enjoy!

And this is the photo they chose for their canvas… LOVE!  Carrie likes to call the white wash the “Rachel Fesko Special”… just for future reference (wink, wink).  Have a great day ya’ll!
